Vienna, Austria – Votivkirche

Votivkirche – December 2004

According to Wikipedia: “…The Votive Church, is one of the most important neo-Gothic religious architectural sites in the world…”

Well…. it certainly made an impression on me way back in 2004!!!

What do you think?? Quite impressive right?? 🙂 **

Vienna, Austria – Minoriten Kirche

One of my fondest memories of Austria, was visiting the Minoriten Kirche!!! It was huge – impressively massive!!! But what was very special (and overwhelmingly beautiful), was the mosaic copy of Leonardo da Vinci’s “The Last Supper“…

I am going to share this masterpiece in a next post – I’ll include some yummy info and everything… 😉 But today I want to share with you a photo that (almost) conveys the size of this Minoriten Kirche…

Minoriten Kirche – December 2004

This is indeed a vertical panorama – I apologise for the obvious stitching (best I could do with the old photos I’ve got 😉 …), but I think you can get the idea… My mom & her friend is standing bottom left – just to put things into perspective!! 😀 **

Vienna, Austria – Majestic Stephansdom

Wow… I have been lacking in posts the last month!!! Have been crazy busy at work, been organising our Canada trip (which by the way – we are flying of to tomorrow evening!! 😀 ), but ever since we switched off our satellite television (way proud of us!!!…), we have been keeping busy with other stuff – rather than technology stuff!!! 🙂 My apologies!!! 🙂

Tonight, I am sharing the awesomely majestic Stephansdom Cathedral in Austria!!! This is a seriously impressive building in the middel of Vienna!!! It towers above the other buildings!!! & has a very gothic feel to it!!! But is is impressive (times 17 000!!! 😉 )…

Stephansdom Cathedral – December 2004

So, that’s all I have time for tonight – have to go and pack for the awesome trip to Edmonton, Canada that lies ahead!!! 😀 It is an almost 24hr trip 😦 but looking very much forward to the week ahead!!! & I’ll be coming back with lots of photos & hopefully unforgettable memories to share with you!!! 🙂 **

Vienna, Austria – Sculpture Detail

Travel Lane memory!!! 🙂 We’re back in Austria… Seems like only yesterday that I was astonished by the amount of detail that were in these sculptures… How I long to go back!!!  I still have plenty of admiration to sprinkle over Vienna!!! 😉 **

December 2004

Austria, Vienna – Schonbrunn Palace

Travel Lane Memory for this week Is from Austria!!! It was probably the coldest day of my life…. (or at least one that was cold enough for the memory to stick!!!) 😀 The mist was like ice mist…. – – – I know I know… for those of you who are constantly posting photos of snow… we don’t have snow here in South Africa… it is something unknown to me!!! So, “ice mist/rain” counts as coldest for me!!! – – – 😉

Anyway back to the Travel Lane Memory… This was taken in 2004 on my trip with my mommy (seen in the frame of my photograph)… On this day we visited the Schonbrunn Palace (apologies… I don’t know how to put the ” on the o…)!!! 😀 It was gorgeous… Even in winter the gardens was breathtaking!!! I loved everything about Vienna…. & I’m longing to return there as quick as possible!!! 🙂

Schonbrunn Palace - my Mom on the left!!!

& let me not forget… Happy Valentines Day to all you romantics out there!!! (I am not a fan of V-day… luckily He-who-thinks-he’s-boss is also not into it!!!) But in the light of all the looooooove going round today, I’m dedicating this part of the post to my gorgeous bf!!! 😀

Happy Valentines Day!!! 😀

Hofburg Palace Panorama, Vienna

This was crazy!!! As if the original palace wasn’t big enough, they had to build this additional wing to the Hofburg Palace in Vienna, Austria!! It is huge, it is beautiful, its culturally priceless – – – & it earns its majestic spot in this weeks Travel Lane post!!! – – – I can’t even imagine South Africa ever having treasures such as these!!! (but possibly I’m not objective in this opinion!!)

The Hofburg Palace

On the left of the building you can clearly see where the old & new building connect!! Gorgeous isn’t it?? You can’t see her, but my mom is inspecting a map on one of the benches on the right hand side!!

This was taken with my very old Kodak camera back in December 2004!!! 🙂 **

Vienna – Church/Cathedral…??

It’s time for my ‘Travel Lane’ post for the week!!! This was one of the first places me & my mom visited when arriving in Vienna! I can’t remember if it is a church or cathedral or anything… I can’t even remember the name of the church (I’m going to call it this for the remainder of the post!!)… It was closed that day, no visitors allowed… But it still left a memory branded in my – well, memory!! – that is forever impressive!!

This was the first sight that would quickly become my favourite city that I have ever visited abroad!! Vienna is just magical…. full of culture, art, yummy foods and gorgeous views!!

*** UPDATED *** I have to thank Lemonissimo for giving me a link to another site: This would be the Greek-Orthodox church!!! Thanks Lemonissimo!! 😀 ** – – – – – – – – –

Have you been to Vienna?? 🙂 **
